remove vocalist alice glass and the 'thrash/thrash/thrash' that is crystal castles, and you have something along the lines of parallels. the solo project of the live drummer for crystal castles, parallels has a sound that could possibly be described as daft punk making mad crazy love with the more ambient side of aphex twin. definitely worth a spin.
oh and while on the subjectt of crystal castles, here's a remix of bloc party's 'hunting for witches' that infuses the style of both bands to produce something pretty damn magical. spinnnnn it.
ok, so sonic youth. they're big. and they're coming to adelaide.
i already have my ticket, as considerding they are my favourite band. so it seems a little daunting writing a post about them as i don't want to do any injustice to their rep, but yeah. they've been around since about 1981 and been making fucking awesome music all the way through. it wasn't that long ago that the 'don't look back' tour was announced with adelaide being announced as being first off the ranks. playing the full daydream nation album will be an experience that no doubt i wouldn't forget quickly about. if you haven't actually heard of them beofre, bad times. hard to explain, but their music is heavily infulenced by garage bands like the stooges and what could be called experimental bands such as the velvet underground. thurston moore uses crazy tunings and shoves all kind of shit in his guitar.
if i say any more im saying too much. or not enough, whatever..
this is what molly pepper describes him/her/themsel(f)(ves) as:
"MOLLy PePper is the mastermind of artists motivated by various creative connivances. By her side, they are no longer independent creative peculiarities, but several looks emerging from different forms of Art, therefore acting like a research motor within an aesthetical discussion. MOLLy PePper is a musical soul where known and unknown artists, hybrids, technicians… can pass each other. MOLLy PePper is a want, a desire, coitus between music and picture. MOLLy PePper is Rock & Roll and Classical at the same time. MOLLy PePper likes perfume, Joy Division and The Velvet Underground; she likes Francis Bacon and Stanley Kubrick. MOLLy PePper likes to take her time, going to the end of things and gives herself means to reach them. MOLLy PePper is a young soul who circulates, who can be bought, who can be rented, who can be let and be shared. MOLLy PePper travels between the various current mediums, she considers advertising as a major art as long as the original motivation remains intact. She can be seen on stage, in Paris or in London, at the cinema, in record dealer shops, in bookshops, on line… at the bend in the road. MOLLy PePper is a particularly efficient narrative association between pictures and original musical themes. MOLLy PePper works on real noises’ transformation into music. She likes making of a musical theme, the structural material of a film."
ok, finally have enough time to post. recently ive discovered the amazing potential to find pretty much thousands of amazing bands on myspace. or more correctly put, ive only just really started looking for amazing bands on myspace. one band i found that are just brilliant is villains of wilhelm. these guys sound like a radical fusion of indie, garage, rock and everything good. have a listen.
another lovelyy band I found is the sidewalk regrets, who remind me a bit of joy division mixed with a hint of moving units. due to jamie thomson's death in '00 they split up, but managed to make a number of haunting & compelling tracks, so also give them a listen. btw both bands are australian, how nice.
i've been lazy, and finally found a spare moment. so blam. blog.
a band i got reallly into a while was pharaohs, they broke up. and leader cheetah pretty much evolved out of it. what could be be described as 70's electric folk revival, mixed with some acoustic twist- they're alot softer, mellow and psychadelic than pharaohs- although dan crannitch's rad vocals still remain. i've posted up both songs off their myspace, bloodlines and fly golden arrow pt.2, although a demo is available.
ok so i figured its probably time to post some shit. thats maybe electric. yeeah its that time of the month again, remix time. first up. a nice little MSTRKRFT remix of new young pony club's 'get lucky'. making up one half of this rad electronic duo is Jesse F. Keeler, former member of death from above 1979 . AI-P makes up the other half of MSTRKRFT and oh wow, he was also the producer for dfa1979's debut (& unfortunately only) album, 'youre a woman i'm a machine' ok enough. here it is.
ok so another band that i'm sure you've all heard of is justice. theyve just remixed klaxon's 'as above, so below'. also if youre in australia, klaxons are touring at the moment so go fucking check them out!
also. maybe its a sin or something to remix bands that just weren't meant to be remixed (i know thats how i feel about placebo anyway) but the next few remixes of radiohead, rage against the machine and the cure just might be exceptions.
